Shisui is said to have adhered to the same ideals as Naruto Uzumaki. He prioritized his own well-being over the views of his clan because he was assigned to watch over his best friend, Itachi Uchiha. However, it appears that his clan's opinions are not as important to him as peace in Konohagakure. As a result, he believes that a true shinobi must sacrifice himself in order to protect peace. He died to keep the peace and gave one of his eyes to Itachi in the hope that Itachi would protect Konoha.
