It's likely to be a mash-up of the greatest tales from Schwartz's three books, some pulled from tradition and others made up entirely from scratch. Kevin Hageman and Dan Hageman, who wrote the early drafts of The Lego Movie when it was more of an action-adventure film, are Del Toros' co-writers. In other words, don't worry: this isn't going to be a parody like the Jack Black-starring Goosebumps. Indeed, with del Toro's name attached, we were almost certain of graphics at least as horrifying as Stephen Gammell's book drawings, which had frightened children for almost four decades.
The storyline is only adequate. The introduction suffers from attempting to provide information while still getting to the shocks as fast as possible. The revelation of what causes all the evil to happen seemed rushed. On the bright side, there are a few good lines in here. Acting is basically mediocre. The poorer elements include Tommy the bully (Austin Abrams), who is over-the-top even by movie standards, and Natalie Ganzhorn as Ruth, one of the adolescents, who simply doesn't fit. To be fair to the actress, I'm not sure the director or screenwriters had a firm grasp on the role either.
