But it's also true that what Scarface has that other gangster movies don't is the rawness, the gangsters' sheer crudeness. The Latino gangsters in this film appear far more menacing and real than the polished Italian or Irish gangsters in other gangster classics such as 'The Godfather' or 'Goodfellas.' This is one of Scarface's major selling points, and I believe that most critics dismiss it as "tackiness!" I've seen the original Scarface from 1932, and I must say that both of these films are far too different from one another, and they should be viewed as two distinct films rather than praising the original over the "remake"! Al Pacino has been chastised for his over-the-top and loud performance in this film. But consider this: that is exactly how the film's creators intended Tony Montana's character to be! He is this enraged young man who makes rash decisions and has tantrums every other minute! He's not the cool Michael Corleone we're used to seeing here. He is Tony Montana, a very tacky, uneducated individual who doesn't think much and is always angry!

Gift Set Scarface Deluxe (2003, DVD)
This set is ideal for any film fan's collection. The cards are pretty cool, and the old version isn't for me, so it'll sit at the bottom of the box until I'm bored and out of things to watch. The money clip was also unique. The only issue I had with this was the nonsense on the second disk about the "origins of hip hop." Yeah, I listen to hip hop occasionally, but I couldn't care less about Scarface's influence on P Diddy or his fellow rap friends. The deleted scenes were also nothing to write home about. It's all about the movie at the end of the day, and this is one of my all-time favorites. It contains everything. Power, money, and betrayal I recommend this box set for collectors, but if you just want to watch the movie, get the DVD. Don't worry, the extras disk is included in the regular, less expensive DVD. Adding to the buzz: During early screenings, there were rumors that the film would be rated X, but the Variety review shrugged, saying, "Pic is bloody but no more brutal than many other films in recent years, though odds are it contains more four-letter words than any other picture to date."
The remake did well at the box office, grossing $66 million worldwide, but not enough to cover the large budget. Nonetheless, the image grew in popularity in home video and beyond. At $79.95 a pop in 1984, home video executives claimed it was the summer's best-selling title. As of June 22, 1984, 100,000 videocassettes had been sold, bringing in an estimated $5 million.
