In the Grand Magic Games, Lucy competes against Flare. The two are neck and neck, with Lucy poised to unleash the "Ultimate Magic of the Stars," when Obra erases her incantation. Flare takes advantage of the situation by severely attacking Lucy as she collapses to the ground. Flare wins, and she uses it as an opportunity to label Lucy "pathetic, unattractive, and a loser." Everyone laughs as Lucy as she trembles next Natsu on the ground. He understands that it is not Lucy's fault, and he urges her to utilize her emotions to help them win instead. Natsu never blames Lucy and even swears that Fairy Tail will change the course of events.

He vowed to turn everyone into ash if they even came close to her. Lucy and Gray later find where Natsu and Wendy are being kept hostage after being rescued by Earthland's Gray and Erza. Lucy embraces Natsu with concern after realizing the two are asleep as a result of their power being depleted.
