Styles, accessories, décor, and textiles began to differ from region to region during the 15th century. Burgundy, a duchy that ruled Flanders and part of modern France, was the fashion-setter between 1430 and 1475. It was Europe's richest area, and the textiles it produced were of the finest qualityâvelvets, silks, gold and silver materials, and embroideries. Following Burgundyâs loss in 1477 at Nancy, Italy became Europeâs fashion capital. The textiles from Italy were as gorgeous as those from Burgundy, but they were lighter and had less fur.
