Ocean Waves, also known as I Can Hear the Sea, has a Rotten Tomatoes critic rating of 87 percent and a 67 percent audience rating of 67 percent, a Letterboxd rating of 3.2/5, a 6/9/10 on the International Movie Database (IMDB), a 6.89/10 on MyAnimeList, a 3/5 on AnimePlanet, and a 68.86 percent community approval rating on Kitsu. It's rare that I feel the bittersweet butterfly of nostalgia rising in my gut; the last time it happened was with Miyazaki's masterpiece "Only Yesterday." The two films have a similar vibe and topic (wonderful reunions, reevaluating your origins, and a change of life), and although "Only Yesterday" works somewhat better, "Ocean Waves" is an otherwise unsurpassed pick for dismal Sunday afternoon homecinema.
The characters are basic, as is the plot, but I believe it is the manner in which it is delivered that lends it its attraction. The film is lengthy and may be seen as a touch sluggish throughout, but if you appreciate romantic coming-of-age films and films with exquisite animation and detail, I don't believe it will be a problem. There are several truly amazing situations in this film, and some of them may even make you cry because of the way they capture events. I'm delighted I bought it since this movie is an instant classic in my view. (The only issue I have to mention is the subtitles.) I normally watch international films in the language in which they were created, and some of the subtitles have inaccuracies that should be corrected for the good of the viewers. I assume it was a sentence fragment, and the subtitles were numbers and symbols rather than the word(s))

Anime Waves Sea
Beautiful animation for the year 1993. An engrossing narrative of youthful love and friendship, and how the two may sometimes clash. To put it another way, it's a love triangle involving two close male friends and a new female. The three major characters are all really lovable, fascinating, complicated, and relatable. It makes deciding what you want to happen very tough. You want both the love connection and the friendship to succeed, and you'll be disappointed if either one fails. This film is a visual narrative masterwork. There are many calm, thoughtful, contemplative sequences that assist to develop and examine the individuals and their connections. The graphic style and character designs are quite attractive. The soundtrack is fantastic. Shigeru Nagata's soundtrack is consistent and integral to the series' overall heart and soul. Reception
I just saw two comparable animation films by Studio Ghibli, Ocean Waves (which is receiving a US release on the 28th, 23 years after its original release; certainly go see it) and Whisper of the Heart. Both of these films spoke to me deeply, and I'd want to see more of the same. Also, I checked through Studio Ghibli's filmography for something comparable, but I couldn't find anything that was precisely what I was searching for. I'm seeking for a slice of life concerning adolescence and relationships. I'd also prefer the characters to be adults rather than youngsters so that I can identify to their challenges. I appreciate the "90s vibe" that these movies give off with the clothes and visuals presented throughout the film, so if that was incorporated in the anime, it would be a nice addition, but it isn't required.

Umi ga Kikoeru/Ocean Waves and Byousoku 5 Centimeter are mirror reflections of one other. Both stories depict lovers separated by physical or emotional distance (as symbolically portrayed by trains, the Japanese's favorite metaphor of distance), yet the evolution of the separation is vastly different. The passion is strong and the suspense is high in both anime, yet there is a calm, wavelike ebb and flow to the storytelling in both. If you like one of these, you'll probably enjoy the other.
