Animaniacs, produced by Steven Spielberg, was a reimagining of an old program concept: a collection of animated cartoons in a half-hour kids' show. Animaniacs depended on creative storylines starring original characters rather than rehashing or reproducing previous theatrical shorts (though it did engage in a little of self-referential clich riding at times). This strategy was novel in the 1990s, since Moral Guardians had pushed out goofball/slapstick programs (think Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies) in the 1980s. Animaniacs was also unusual in terms of production: Spielberg granted the authors entire creative leeway over the direction of the sketches (as he did with Tiny Toon Adventures and Freakazoid! ), which is why many fans remember it fondly. Viewers don't like it because of Nostalgia Goggles; it's a truly imaginative and well-written program (its Emmy awards attest to that). Kids learnt from it as well; most members of Generation Y will recall having to memorize "Yakko's World" and "Wakko's America" for geography examinations. Raise your hand if "The Ballad of Magellan" taught you about the conquistadors. Who says instructional programs can't be entertaining?

The Warners were ultimately able to escape the watertower in 1993, and they started wreaking havoc once again. To try to stop the turmoil, Warner Bros. CEO Thaddeus Plotz appointed Dr. Scratchansniff to keep a watch on them to examine and "cure" them of their craziness. There are several tales about how they came to be. They are on their way to Pennsylvania in "Draculee, Draculaa" because their parents are pencils, yet in certain episodes, such as "King Yakko," they seem to be linked to royalty. Wakko's Wish depicts their regal ancestry as well.
