Lee Myeongyi has had a pneumothorax, or a collapsed lung, his whole life. He despises the attention he gets at school for his bouts of loud hyperventilating, lengthy coughing spells, and exemption from physical education and military duty. Myeongyi is left feeling like an outsider, whether he is subjected to his peers' curiosity or ire. However, Myeongyi is often shown compassion and understanding by the class president, Han Seonho. With his pleasant gestures and attractive appearance, he becomes Myeongyi's first crush. Myeongyi attends his high school reunion nine years later for one reason: to meet Han Seonho again. He has a flicker of optimism about the other man's affections for him, but that hope is immediately destroyed after seeing the brilliant gold ring on Seonho's left hand and listening to their classmates' probing inquiries.
